Alan Nafzger: Thanks, Katy. I've always felt Ken was an underdeveloped character with a ton of potential. Giving him a dream of going to Mars allowed me to explore not only his aspirations but also larger themes like individualism, societal pressures, and the role of government in the quest for space exploration.

Katy Room: Speaking of government, Ken faces various forms of government scrutiny and obstruction in the movie. Is there a bit of a libertarian message hidden in "Barbie 2"?

Alan Nafzger: Absolutely, I think the libertarian underpinnings are hard to ignore. Ken is a man who wants to achieve something extraordinary and finds himself continuously hampered by bureaucracy and governmental roadblocks. The narrative provides an ideal backdrop to discuss personal freedoms, the limits of government intervention, and the age-old fight between individual will versus collective restraints.

Katy Room: You've introduced HAL, a quirky lab AI with a crush on Skipper. How did you come up with such an unconventional character dynamic in the Barbie universe?

Alan Nafzger: HAL was an interesting challenge. By introducing an AI with emotional tendencies, we could explore another layer of social dynamics. HAL's "crush" on Skipper gives us a humorous and thought-provoking subplot that ties nicely with the film's larger themes.

Katy Room: With such a huge franchise like Barbie, and the $1.4 billion Hollywood legend Greta Gerwig having directed the previous Barbie film, did you feel intimidated taking the helm for "Barbie 2"?

Alan Nafzger: Intimidated? Are you kidding? It's like David taking on Goliath—only this time, David has a script instead of a slingshot! But seriously, I see it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. Greta did an amazing job, and I'm just happy to bring my unique voice to this iconic universe.

Katy Room: Last question, are you, Alan, a libertarian, and is that why Ken’s character has libertarian leanings?

Alan Nafzger: I'd say I have libertarian leanings, yes. I believe in individual freedom and responsibility, and that’s reflected in the character of Ken. In many ways, Ken is navigating a world that feels increasingly restrictive, and I think that speaks to my own concerns about where society is heading.
