Line of Action Drawing

Project Description:

Do a series of line of action and bean drawings looking for a way to quickly draw the figure.

      • These will be fast drawings where you are looking to be loose and not scratchy with your line weight

      • Make sure you have a brush that is working for you with variation - a basic pen is not a good choice for this one - you can start with the 2b pencil in brush presets and turn it blue

Process:

  1. Start with quick drawings of only the bean at 30 seconds.

  2. Gradually add more of the gesture as you add more time to the drawings up to 2 min.

Line of Action Alphabet:

      • Line of Actions are C's, Slanted I's

      • Line of Actions are not straight up and down I's and not X's and not O's

Line of Action with Bean When looking for the line of action in the bean shape of the torso You are sometimes looking for the spine but mostly looking for the flow in the form and it will often connect to the extended limbs when drawing the whole figure.

Susan Bonner - Exploring more line of action - try to focus the drawing on the action

Nicholas Marino - Here Nicholas was able to capture the action of the pose - Anatomy is not important when looking for action.

Claudia Pimentel - Line of Action in Red, Beans in Blue, Body in Orange. I like to experiment and draw the LOA first, and sometimes the Bean first. Expermient and try what feels good, and then switch it up!

Claudia Pimentel - As you become more comfortable with gesturing, pushing and manipulating the figure using LOA and the Bean will become easier and second nature!

Another way to think about the line of action is the directional force the way Michael Mattesi shows in Force Life Drawing for Animators
