Head Shapes

Project Description:

The goal of this project is to explore shape in character.

  1. Do some exercises with Head shapes that all come from the same shape.

  2. Then explore heads with different shapes.

  3. Then from these studies pick your best 6-8 to put into a layout.

Deliverables:

      • a Face shape study of 6-8 faces

The concept of shapes can be applied to the head: Think about different shapes that can be explored:

  • Pear

  • Apple (Circle)

  • Heart

  • Triangle

  • Dumbell

The main way to push the pose of these faces is to have the construction lines of the face be at different levels, towards the bottom or the top, play with proportions to find different ages and moods.

Youssef Zamani - Note how the line for the eyes goes up or down on the head and the difference that it gives the shape. Explore changing these proportions while keeping the same basic shape to create 8 variations.

Chris Ables (@ChrisAbleArt) - Face Shape Exploration

Sarah Puett - Head Shape Study from the same basic shape - by moving the structure line for the eyes you get a different type of character.

Sarah is flipping and inverting this shape to achieve different results.

Keegan Moore is inverting the same shape and exploring the eye structure line

Miki Davis is exploring the eye line and how it affects inherent mood for the character

Fischer Mancilla is playing with a sense of age, note how the age feels like it is changing depending on the location of the structure line for the eyes.
