MOVE SEQUENCE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project involves creating a short animation cycle of some sort of action – pulling a rope, jumping a hurdle, snapping a finger, etc. The focus should be on capturing action and movement. It will be presented both in animated form (using the Photoshop Timeline) and as a single image showing the transition of all frames of the animation at once.

Do not do a walk cycle or a movement going forward as that will be covered in 2D Animation.

We will be using video reference for the move sequence study: find a creative commons lisense from youtube or make your own video

Further your understanding by watching Glen Keane's animation Duet and Thought of You by Ryan Woodward.

Deliverables:

  • Move Sequence Still with emphasized poses

  • Move Sequence Giff, or mov or mp3

Technical help:

Overview:

Susan Bonner -Pulling Animated Gif made in Photoshop Animation Timeline - Still using the line of action and the bean - this is the way to start all of the poses.

Susan Bonner -Pulling - Image Move Sequence

Preston Blair - Cartoon Animation - Get the Book

Krista Hill - Character Move Cycle for Ollie the Bee - note the Facial Expression change for different actions - That bee is pissed when it is about to sting.

Preston Blair - Movement of the Body Masses - This book is in the DM Office - Check it out - very useful tool in understanding movement of the figure.

STUDENT examples:

Nicole Slater - Action Sequence of Boy Pulling Rope - Animated Gif in Photoshop

Nicole Slater - Action Sequence of Boy Pulling Rope

Here the image is shown as a still taking cues from Preston Blair's motion studies Nicole is showing a clear arc of the action.

Mikayla Taylor - Action Sequence Boy Pulling Rope - Animated Gif in Photoshop

Notice the difference between the 2 pull sequences - in Nicole's pull she is bending the back in an arch backward and Mikayla is arching forward. As long as the pull is exaggerated you can find a good drawing for the character at this peak of action.

The key to these studies is to find a place to pause the action at these times according to principles of animation:

Anticipation

Action

Settle

Darian Papineau - Kick Action

Notice the Arc that she has drawn out for us and the pause at the top of the action

Also note the slight bounce in the settle that the figure has once it lands.

Darian Papineau - Kick Still

Notice how she is using transparency to show onion skinning on this action study.

The darker images are showing our 3 main keyframes - Anictipation, Action, Settle

Emma Kerr - Boy Circling Animated Gif in Photoshop

Here Emma is using a fluid technique not always going for a direct drawing of anatomy, as sometimes it is more important to show the flow of movement as we studied in Glen Keane's animation Duet and Thought of You by Ryan Woodward.

Emma Kerr - Boy Circling - Photoshop Still Layout

In the still you can see the extension of the hands to show where the hand is coming from which pushes the flow.

Emma is also showing the circle - line of action of the foot in the drawing furthest right above.
