Guillermo Tolentino was a sculptor active in early-mid 20th century who created the "Bonifacio Monument," the hero's monument of the Philippine Revolution and "Oblation," the symbol of the University of the Philippines, and received the title of National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture in 1973. However, another important aspect to his public personality, as an espiritista (spiritist), is little-known, especially in contrast to the popularity of his sculptural work.
In 2014, Yagi came across his works—a sculpture and drawings for a book that he had written and published—at Vargas Museum, and was immediately fascinated by the gap between the impressions made by his classical sculpture and his strange drawings. In this exhibition, Yagi focused on his little-known face as an espiritista and an interpreter, and proposed a way to appreciate his sculptural works with a perspective different than people usually know.
