Kalibutan —which means “the world” in Visaya Language—is a video work composed of 45 recordings filmed on Siquijor Island in the Philippines. The speakers include foreigners staying short- or long-term, Filipinos who have relocated from other islands, and native residents. Each was invited to “speak to yourself for about ten minutes in your mother tongue.” Though initially hesitant, they gradually attempt a dialogue with themselves.
Kalibutan is a work that seeks to engage with the ever-evolving and continuously renewed worldview generated in the everyday life of Siquijor Island.
