Groundscapes is a community-scaled sports and leisure pavilion placed on the Arkansas river in Little Rock, AR. This project focuses on the relationship between program and ground, known as "Integrated Design Studio." Groundscapes begins this process by working heavily on details of the site. Being build directly on a river that floods, working with the sites factors were important to the overall design of the project, the primary one being the large, extending deck that touches the river directly.
The Project sports a primary campus-like program, having many different buildings across the site. The program consists of differently sized sport rooms, a recreational pool, watersport rental, a large rock-climbing gym, and locker rooms. The buildings are all connected via a large, exterior bridge that acts as an exterior second-story and sun deck. Most windows are placed facing the river, for views of the river and to capture sunlight. The yoga rooms on the ground floor sport operable glass doors, allowing wind and sunlight in if desired.Â
