Crossroads Market is a commercial, open-air market project set within downtown Kansas City. The project had us take our previous proposal from Familiar Exceptions and alter the structure for the program of the project. The market has an interior, conditioned space on the street side, but steps down to an exterior, open-air space for all types of market stalls.
Conceptually, the repeating bays of the structure were informed by the “split” forms of Familiar Exceptions, using the triangular shapes to split the roof for light to pierce the market at certain times of day. The structure is constructed of mass timber and CLT roof paneling.
