All participants of the graduate program receive essential weekly mentoring. Once the graduate year is over, it is up to the staff member, in collaboration with their mentor/supervisor, to choose the frequency of their mentorship. This is something that can change (increase/decrease) as much as needed in different seasons and stages of your career.
ALL staff, including allied health assistants can access mentorship on as needed or ongoing basis if they wish by requesting this of their senior clinician/director. Further, if there is an issue requiring support that is outside the skillset of the internal mentors, an external mentor with experience in that area may be sourced.
This is particularly true for clinicians choosing to explore the mental health occupational therapy service stream. Monthly group supervision will be offered to learn and develop mental health OT specific training and information, in addition to one-on-one supervision (at the frequency deemed required between the staff member and the supervisor) once a caseload is developed.
Please note that at Joyful Journey OT, the terms “mentoring” and “supervision” are often used interchangeably given the personnel that administer these is often the same person. However, there is a distinction. Mentorship is generally non-authoritative, offering the mentee guidance, support and encouragement towards the mentees development and improvement. Supervision is where the supervisor is responsible for the team members job performance and ensures the team member is meeting job expectations.
