The Convention was adopted by resolution 3235 (XXIX) of the General Assembly dated 12 November 1974, pursuant to resolution 3182 (XXVIII) dated 18 December 1973 and taking into account the report of the Committee on the Pacific Uses of Outer Space. The Convention was opened for signature on 14 January 1975.

La Convención fue aprobada por la resolución 3235 (XXIX) de la Asamblea General de fecha 12 de noviembre de 1974, de conformidad con la resolución 3182 (XXVIII) de fecha 18 de diciembre de 1973 y teniendo en cuenta el informe de la Comisión sobre la Utilización del Espacio Ultraterrestre en el Pacífico. The States Parties to this Convention.
Recognizing the common interest of all mankind in furthering the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes,
Recalling that the Treaty on principles governing the activities of States in the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies of 21 January 1961 affirms that States shall bear international responsibility for their national activities in outer space and refers to the State on whose registry an object launched into outer space is carried,
Recalling also that the Agreement on the rescue of astronauts, the return of astronauts and the return of objects launched into outer space of 22 April 1968 provides that a launching authority shall, upon request, furnish identifYing data prior to the return of an object it has launched into outer space found beyond the territorial limits of the launching authority,
Recalling further that the Convention on international liability for damage caused by space objects of 29 March 1912 establishes international rules and procedures concerning the liability of launching States for damage caused by their space objects,
Desiring, in the light of the Treaty on principles governing the activities of States in the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, to make provision for the national registration by launching States of space objects launched into outer space,
Desiring further that a central register of objects launched into outer space be established and maintained, on a mandatory basis, by the Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Desiring also to provide for States Parties additional means and procedures to assist in the identification of space objects
Believing that a mandatory system ot registering objects launcbed into outer space vould in particular~ assist in their identification and would contribute to the application and development of international lay governing the eXploration and use of outer space
Los Estados Partes en esta Convención.
Reconociendo el interés común de toda la humanidad en promover la exploración y utilización del espacio ultraterrestre con fines pacíficos,
Recordando que el Tratado sobre los principios que rigen las actividades de los Estados en la exploración y utilización del espacio ultraterrestre, incluidos la Luna y otros cuerpos celestes, de 21 de enero de 1961, afirma que los Estados serán responsables internacionalmente de sus actividades nacionales en el espacio ultraterrestre y se refiere al Estado en cuyo registro se lleva un objeto lanzado al espacio ultraterrestre,
Recordando también que el Acuerdo sobre el salvamento de astronautas, la devolución de astronautas y la devolución de objetos lanzados al espacio ultraterrestre de 22 de abril de 1968 establece que la autoridad de lanzamiento, previa solicitud, proporcionará datos de identificación antes de la devolución de un objeto que haya lanzado al espacio ultraterrestre que se encuentra más allá de los límites territoriales de la autoridad de lanzamiento,

Deseando además que el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas establezca y mantenga, con carácter obligatorio, un registro central de objetos lanzados al espacio ultraterrestre,
Deseando también proporcionar a los Estados Partes medios y procedimientos adicionales para ayudar en la identificación de objetos espaciales
Creyendo que un sistema obligatorio de registro de los objetos lanzados al espacio ultraterrestre ayudaría en particular a su identificación y contribuiría a la aplicación y desarrollo del derecho internacional que rige la exploración y el uso del espacio ultraterrestre
Article I
For the purposes of thia Convention:
(A) The term I1launching State" means:
(i) A State which launches or procures the launching of a space object; (ii) A State trom whose territory or facility a space object is launched; (B) The term "space object" includes component parts of a space object as well as its launch vehicle and parts thereof;
(C.) The term "State of registry" means a launching State on whose registry a space object is carried in accordance vith article II.
Artículo I
Para los efectos de esta Convención:
(A) El término "Estado de lanzamiento" significa:
(i) Un Estado que lanza o procura el lanzamiento de un objeto espacial; (ii) Un Estado desde cuyo territorio o instalación se lanza un objeto espacial;
( B) El término "objeto espacial" incluye los componentes de un objeto espacial, así como su vehículo de lanzamiento y partes del mismo;
(C.) El término "Estado de registro" significa un Estado de lanzamiento en cuyo registro se transporta un objeto espacial de conformidad con vi con el artículo II.
1. When a space object is launched into earth orbit or beyond, the aunching State shall register the space object by means of an entry in an appropriate registry 'which it she.l.l maintain. Each launching State shall inforili. the SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations of the establishment of such a registry.
2. Where there are two or more launching States in respect of any such space object, they shall jointly determine which one of them shall regiater the object in accordance with paragraph 1 of this article, bearing in mind the provisions of article VIII of the Treaty on principles governing the activities of States in the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, and without prejudice to appropriate agreements concluded or to be concluded among the launching States on jurisdiction and control over the space object and over any personnel thereof.
3. The contents of each registry and the conditions under which it is maintained shall be determined by the State of registry concerned.
1. Cuando se lance un objeto espacial a la órbita terrestre o más allá, el Estado de lanzamiento inscribirá el objeto espacial por medio de una entrada en un registro apropiado que mantendrá. Cada Estado de lanzamiento informará. el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas del establecimiento de dicho registro.
2. Cuando haya dos o más Estados de lanzamiento con respecto a cualquiera de esos objetos espaciales, determinarán conjuntamente cuál de ellos registrará el objeto de conformidad con el párrafo 1 de este artículo, teniendo en cuenta las disposiciones del artículo VIII del Tratado. sobre los principios que rigen las actividades de los Estados en la exploración y utilización del espacio ultraterrestre, incluidos la Luna y otros cuerpos celestes, y sin perjuicio de los acuerdos pertinentes concertados o por celebrar entre los Estados de lanzamiento sobre jurisdicción y control sobre el objeto espacial y sobre cualquier personal de la misma.
3. El contenido de cada registro y las condiciones en que se mantenga serán determinados por el Estado de registro de que se trate.
