Tom Olliver Jr.

Born in Leamington, Tom Olliver Jnr was the son of the great steeplechase jockey Tom Olliver, rider of three Grand National winners and runner-up in three others.

Unlike his father, Tom Jnr concentrated on riding on the Flat and gained his most important success in the 1853 Ebor Handicap on Pantomime, trained by Tom Eskrett.

He won another good race, the 1853 Newmarket Handicap, on Talfourd.

Tom rode a total of 29 winners but, sadly, died young at the Ely Inn, Wroughton (where he had been landlord) in the spring of 1868.
