Paddy O'Brien

1955-1997

Patrick William O’Brien, always known as Paddy, was born at West Barsham, near Fakenham, on May 6, 1955.

Apprenticed to Fred Winter for three years, he rode his first winner, 7-4 favourite Sammy’s Girl, owned and trained by Wellingore permit holder Bill Ransom, in the Barsham Novices’ Hurdle at Fakenham on Whit Monday, May 28, 1973.

Paddy registered his biggest win on 10-1 chance Outpoint for Fred Winter in the 1977 Joe Coral Golden Hurdle Final Cheltenham. He rode his highest number of winners in a season, eleven, in the 1976/77 campaign.

He won four chases on Fred Winter’s grand veteran Sonny Somers over the space of three seasons when the horse was aged 14, 15 and 16 years old, three of those wins coming at Stratford, including the Starlight Diamond Handicap Chase and the Roddy Baker Gold Cup.

Paddy O’Brien died on March 24, 1997, aged only 41.
