Garfield Old

1950 - 2015

Garfield Old, better known as Gary Old, was born at Plymouth, Devon, on October 22, 1950.

He was apprenticed to Miss Louie Dingwall from 1967 to 1972.

His first winner was Olympic Boy at Bath on May 23, 1968, one of nine he rode as an apprentice on the Flat.

He then took out a jump jockey’s licence and had his most successful season in 1973/74, during which he rode nine winners, five of them coming on the Donald Underwood-trained True Song. These included three high profile victories: the 1973 Sir Ken Pattern Hurdle at Worcester, the 1974 John Player Hurdle Final at Haydock, and that year’s County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Gary Old died, aged 64, on April 2, 2015. He was buried at St Michael’s Church, Stinsford, near Dorchester.
