Carol Orton

Carol Dennis Orton was born in December 1932 and served his apprenticeship with Tom Masson at Lewes. Weighing little more than 6 stone, he rode 20 winners as an apprentice.

Nine of them came in 1949, including the Stewards’ Handicap at Epsom on Derby Day and the valuable Brocas Handicap at Ascot in October.

However, like so many others, he struggled when coming out of his time. Following the loss of his 5lb claim, he rode just two winners in Britain, both of them for Masson. The first of these was on Blue Petrel in the Fillies’ Nursery Handicap at Lewes on September 4, 1951; the second coming on another two-year-old, Cloud of Glory, in the Manton Stakes at Newbury on April 19, 1952. He did not hold a British jockey’s licence after 1952.
