Joe O'Gorman

Northern-based National Hunt jockey Joseph Martin O’Gorman began his racing career with Arthur Stephenson and Roger Fisher before joining Sue Bramall, who trained at Burtree House Stables near Thirsk, as a 3lb claimer. He rode Mrs Bramall’s mare Castlevennon to win over hurdles and fences and finished fourth on her in the 1990 Scottish National.

Joe enjoyed a decent season in 1991/91 riding 11 winners (nine of them for Sue Bramall). Six of those were achieved on the chaser What About Me, including the Durham National at Sedgefield on March 5, 1991 and the valuable Wetherby ‘Centenary’ Handicap Chase on Easter Monday.

The best horse he rode in the 1991/92 season, though nobody realised it at the time, was Antonin. Joe rode him in his first five novice hurdles and would no doubt have kept the ride but for suffering a career-ending injury in a fall from Red Procession in a Southwell selling hurdle on February 24, 1992. Having been forced to retire from the saddle, he became Mrs Bramall’s assistant trainer and head lad.
