Declan O'Shea

Declan Gerald O’Shea was born in Ireland.on May 26, 1969. He rode his first winner on Easy Kotar at Phoenix Park on May 31, 1989, five days after his 20th birthday.

He won back-to-back renewals of the Irish Cesarewitch for Curragh trainer John Oxx on Aiybak (below) in 1991 and Sinntara in 1992. He also won the Irish Cambridgeshire and was champion apprentice in Ireland in 1992.

He came to Britain in January 1996 to ride for Lady Herries, who trained at Angmering Park, Littlehampton, in Sussex. He rode five winners from 128 rides that year, easily his most important success being achieved on 66/1 outsider Moscow Mist for Lady Herries in the Schweppes Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood on August 1, 1996.

Sadly, things did not progress from thereon. He rode just two winners from 88 rides in 1997, both for Lady Herries, on Danish Rhapsody in the Glenmore Group Challenge Cup Handicap at Folkestone on May 28 and Mowelga in a three-year-old maiden at Newbury on October 24. Declan’s association with Lady Herries finished at the end of the season.

The following year yielded just one win from 96 rides, that being on Gay Breeze for trainer Paul Felgate in a six-furlongs handicap at Doncaster on May 4, 1998. He struggled for rides thereafter and had no more winners. His final mount on a British racecourse was in a two-mile handicap at Southwell on May 17, 1999, finishing 11th of 13 on Action Jackson, trained by Brian McMath.
