He won back-to-back renewals of the Irish Cesarewitch for Curragh trainer John Oxx on Aiybak (below) in 1991 and Sinntara in 1992. He also won the Irish Cambridgeshire and was champion apprentice in Ireland in 1992.

He rode five winners from 128 rides that year, easily his most important success being achieved on 66/1 outsider Moscow Mist for Lady Herries in the Schweppes Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood on August 1, 1996.

Declan’s association with Lady Herries finished at the end of the season.
