Harry Orde-Powlett

1954-2023


Amateur rider Harry Algar Nigel Orde-Powlett, from Leyburn, North Yorkshire, was born on 14 February 1954. He rode his first winner, Abbey Pride, in the Ayrshire Yeomanry Cup (Amateur Riders) Novices’ Hurdle at Ayr on 14 October 1974. Abbey Pride was owned and trained by Harry’s father, Lord Bolton.


He won three hurdle races during the 1976/77 season on The Froddler, owned by Lord Bolton and trained by Bill Watts, then finished second on him in the 1977 Joe Coral Golden Handicap Hurdle Final (now the Pertemps) at Cheltenham’s National Hunt meeting in March.


He achieved his greatest success when partnering his own mare Goolagong, trained by Neville Crump, to win the Wetherby Pattern Novices’ Chase (now the Charlie Hall Chase) on 12 November 1977, beating Jeff King’s mount Peter Scot by two lengths, with Michael Dickinson 15 lengths back in third on Fair View. Harry won twice more on her later in the season.


A qualified pilot, he became the 8th Baron Bolton on the death of his father in 2001, residing at the family seat at Bolton Hall, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire.


His son, Ben Orde-Powlett, rode as a conditional jockey for George Moore in Middleham. Another son, Thomas, a lieutenant in the Irish Guards, was awarded Military Cross by the Queen for his bravery in Iraq in 2003.


Lord Bolton (formerly Harry Orde-Powlett) died on Saturday, 10 June 2023, aged 69. His eldest son Thomas inherited the title.
