What are some things you are most passionate about?
I'm most passionate about ensuring that everyone's voice is heard. I believe that if any student has a concern about anything, they should feel comfortable approaching any member of their student government (and be given the resources to do so). In order to establish this trust, it is important on SGA's part that there is a combination of concerted publicity efforts, a trend of following through on promises made to the student body, and a history of decision-making with students' diverse interests in mind.
What have you done or helped do on campus during your time at JHU?
For most of my three years at JHU, I've spent most of my on-campus time dedicated to Eclectics Dance Group, a now 80-person dance team that welcomes and trains students of all skill levels and style preferences. As I grew from general member to secretary and now to president, I've always been driven by a desire to ensure that anyone who is seeking a supportive community and family here at Hopkins is able to find it with us, and those looking to learn something new are provided with a high-quality environment to do so. From completely revamping our social event agenda to promoting executive board unity and more, I have been working constantly towards these goals, and have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with an equally dedicated executive board to make these goals become reality.
Why did you decide to run for office?
In my junior year, I have started to turn my attention from just my dance team to bigger issues on campus, by joining the Lunchbox Moment 2020 organizers (providing opportunities to APIDA+International students to tell their unique stories) and serving as the Publicity Chair of the Women and Gender Minorities' Caucus. It was through interacting with other students that were passionate about these issues, my experience leading Eclectics, and interfacing with other student leaders that I realized that many of the stumbling blocks that we faced as students and leaders could be removed or reduced with a closer connection with SGA. It is my hope that if I and others like me serve as senators, other students will see that their representatives look like them and come from similar backgrounds as them, and there can be more trust between the student body and SGA.
