Hydrologist, Chair of the Scientific Program Committee at the Stockholm International Water Institute (1991–2003), winner of the Blue Planet Prize, 2018
Sweden
Malin Falkenmark was a pioneering hydrologist and water scientist. She is best known as the developer of the Falkenmark Water Stress Indicator - an indicator of water available for human use in a particular geographic setting, and the “green - blue water” concept. She also co-authored the influential hydrological paper “Stationarity Is Dead: Whither Water Management?". Over her long career, she was active in many international bodies where she had a quiet, but hugely significant impact. She was one of the forces behind the establishment of the Stockholm Water Week (now World Water Week) and a mentor to many water scientists who occupy positions of influence throughout the world today. Throughout her career, Malin emphasised the importance of young people contributing to the discussion about earth’s future. She spent much of her own time as well as money for personal recognition prizes supporting this. Recently, IHE Alumnus Afua Owusu became the first winner of the Falkenmark Award by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), recognizing outstanding contributions to hydrological understanding of water scarcity and water supply.
