Winner of Spinoza Prize, 2023 - the highest prize in the Netherlands for academic work, also called the "Dutch Nobel Prize". She co-chaired UNEP's Global Environment Outlook-6 which was presented at the UN Environment Assembly in 2019, winning the Association of American Publishers PROSE award for Environmental Science. She co-chaired the Earth Commission (2019-2022) and is a member of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water (2022-2024). Joyeeta is also professor of environment and development in the global south at the University of Amsterdam, leading the programme group on Governance and Inclusive Development. She was lead author in the IPCC which won the 2007 Nobel Prize with Al Gore. On the editorial board of seven journals, she boasts over 17,000 citations, supervising research in areas of climate change, forest, food/fish, water, disaster governance, and development challenges such as food governance and child marriage.
