Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources (2023-current), IHE Delft Alumna
Nicaragua
Heyddy completed her PhD in Hydrology and Water Resources from IHE Delft in 2014. She served as Director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, and was appointed as Minister for Environment and Natural Resources of Nicaragua in September 2023. Heyddy's research analysed groundwater in the Central American Dry Corridor, dominated with rainfed agriculture and affected by droughts. As Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Heyddy faces significant challenges as Nicaragua has seen a rise in violence against environmental activists, and was found by Global Witness to be the most dangerous country per capita for land and environmental defenders in 2020.
