SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPTS TO GRAD STUDIES: Graduate Studies requires you to provide them with final transcripts including proof of graduation. Information regarding where to send your transcripts can be found on the Grad Studies website.
IMMUNIZATION CLEARANCE: All students in the University of California system must submit up-to-date immunization records prior to being able to register for the fall quarter. Sign in to the Student Health & Counseling Services (SHCS) electronic messaging system to submit these records. If you have any concerns or issues, send a message through this platform or call SHCS at 530-752-2349.
CREATE A COMPUTER ACCOUNT: All new students must establish a campus computing account and a UC Davis email account. Go to the Information Technology website and follow the instructions for establishing a computing account, Kerberos ID (your campus login ID), and password. It may take up to 48 hours after submitting the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) before you are able to access this function. This must be completed before registration for orientation and trainings.
GET YOUR STUDENT ID (AGGIECARD): You will need to order your AggieCard (the UC Davis identification card) in order to access certain services on campus. Go to the AggieCard website and follow the steps listed for a graduate student to obtain an AggieCard. You must have BOTH your student ID (AggieCard) and email address/Kerberos password established before you can register for classes!!!
Finally! Now that you've created a Kerberos account, obtained an AggieCard and submitted your immunization records, its time to register for fall classes! Check out the electives page for potential courses you might take in the upcoming year, and the rotations page for recommendations on how to choose and contact professors for your first rotation.
Every IGG student has an assigned academic faculty advisor who can assist them in designing a program of study to meet their specific interests. Advisors can also answer academic questions as they occur during the year and provide official signature, as required. Please email your academic advisor to schedule a one-on-one meeting before the quarter starts.
Registration will remain open until mid-September. You can build your Fall quarter schedule through Schedule Builder at any time without requiring a specific appointment time (this is for undergraduates only). Ideally, you should be enrolled in the majority of your courses by the first week of September. Complete instructions for using SISWEB will be included in the registration materials you will be receiving via email from the Registrar’s Office mid-late July.

A full course-load is 12 units - you must be registered for 12 each quarter (research units can be scheduled for varying units to bring your total to 12). You will mostly be engaged in course work and rotations during the first two quarters. Typically, you will commence your thesis research the spring quarter of your first year. You will be expected to remain on campus to work and study during the summers following your first year, and that you will remain solely employed as a graduate student during your Ph.D. studies.
Note: If the system is saying that you are missing prerequisites, please write a petition for exception, which will pop up when you attempt to register-this will save your spot in line. Faculty and staff are unable to approve those exceptions until after mid-August so please be patient.
REGISTER FOR FALL ORIENTATION(S): Before the quarter begins, UC Davis offers various orientations and trainings to help students adjust to their first quarter. Some of these activities are mandatory, while others are recommended to help students become more familiar with the culture in Davis. Details about available graduate student orientations and registration can be found on the Fall Orientation page.
UC DAVIS HEALTH REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW STUDENTS: All incoming new, transfer and graduate students are required to meet the UC Immunization and TB Risk Screening requirement. Students become compliant with this requirement by entering their vaccination dates, uploading a copy of their immunization records, and completing the TB Risk Screening Questionnaire via the UC Davis Student Health and Counseling Services Health-e-Messaging website. Here is a link to the website tutorial for the steps on completing the paperwork for this requirement.
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY: A word of reminder is that incoming students will not receive their first paycheck until November 1st, so please keep this in mind and start planning for that delay in payment as early as possible. Also, if you are a domestic student, but not a California resident, you should begin the process of establishing residency (below) as soon as you arrive in Davis. It takes one full year to establish residency and to be eligible for resident tuition rates.
ESTABLISHING CALIFORNIA RESIDENCY: According to the Registrar, "Tuition and Fees are assessed each term based on a residence classification: Resident or Nonresident. All incoming students must complete a Statement of Legal Residence (SLR) so that a residence determination can be made. If a student does not complete the SLR or submit the necessary documents, the student will be classified as a Nonresident and will be assessed Nonresident Supplemental Tuition. Students classified as Nonresident in a prior term may petition for change of classification to resident once all the UC Residence requirements are met." SLRs are also needed from students who begin a new program at UC Davis, such as undergraduate students entering a graduate/professional school program. The graduate student quarterly deadlines for filing the SLR are July 1 for Fall, December 1 for Winter, and March 1 for Spring after a full year of California . See the Registrar page for the link to the SLR form, and the University of California help pages for information about residency requirements and more details about how to establish residency.
FILL OUT THE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN (SHIP) WAIVER FORM - OPTIONAL: All UC Davis students are required to have health insurance. In order to satisfy this requirement, all students are automatically enrolled in the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP), but if you already have health insurance from an alternative source and would like to opt out of UC SHIP, be sure to fill out the waiver before the deadline. Click here for more information regarding the waiver requirements and other important conditions.
