Kun Faya Kun is a phrase from Surah Yasin — the heart of the Quran — at the end of the verse 82 which literally means, "Happen, and it shall happen!". This phrase is later being borrowed by the Indian maestro, musician legendary AR Rahman to be composed in a Sufi song mixed with Urdu and Hindi language and featured in a Bollywood movie titled Rockstar which was released in the year 2012 and directed by Imtiaz Ali.
Rockstar basically revolves around a passionate lover and a negative rocker, Janardhan Jakhar, depicted by Ranbir Kapoor when he fell in love with a woman called Heer, brought to life by Nargis Fakhri. In the earlier stage of their love story, Heer reluctantly doubted Janardhan's love as she is set to marry a person of her family's choice. But as time flew past by, they both sank in love with each other but things turn out bad when Janardhan often followed his lust rather than his purity in love. And this wild lust of him shall make him regretful in the end of the film.
The song "Kun Faya Kun" was sung by three main singers — Javed Ali, AR Rahman himself and Mohit Chauhan who represents the qasidah leaders and Ranbir Kapoor (the protagonist in the film) respectively. Followed closely behind by the background singers that surely won't disappoint.
"Kun Faya Kun" emerged when Janardhan was kicked out from his house by his own siblings, as he was accused of stealing his elder sister's money when in fact he didn't. He then took refuge in a mosque where zikir and selawat event often being held. While he was trying to settle down, he heard a group of people singing this song and he incited to join them as his ambition was to be a singer. Then he expressed every single bit of feeling through the poetic verses of lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil.
Of course this song is heavily linked with the qasidah and zikr songs that are famous in our Islamic culture, as the song itself borrowed the Arabic phrase to be its title, and in their respective culture this kind of song widely known as qawwali or sufi songs. For other example of songs sharing the same genre includes Mere Rashke Qamar, Sajda from the film My Name is Khan, Kabira from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and many more.
The very first Islamic value that was instilled in this song is simply repentance. That to repent is never gonna be too late or a wrong move. In fact, God never reject someone repenting to him, instead He opened His arms to embrace our homecoming towards the nature of mankind (fitrah). To err is human. A sinner who regretted his sins and regularly repents is way better than a sinner that keeps on constantly committing sins. For example we can see in the line, "Aaja khalipan mein pee ka ghar tera. Tere bin khali aaja khalipan mein." which profoundly means, "Enter this void (home of Your beloved) — the heart, it is empty without You. Without You, existed this emptiness." Meaning that when Alloh doesn't present in ourselves, we shall feel the void and the emptiness during our routine in life, as if something is wrong somewhere. This is when we should make our way back to Him with repentance.
Next, the second Islamic value available in the song is purity. The song intended to purify our soul from every dark and negative aura that are damaging our heart thus, making ourselves to become calmer and ready to perform ibadah sincerely to Him. This point is proven with the line, "Sajra savera mere tann barse, Kajra andhera teri jalti lau." which literally means, "The morning rain showers blessings on my body. It purifies the dark part of my soul.". The verse above acted as an allegory of if God bless our life, then nothing should turn out to be wrong. And to be utter pure is crucial in order to produce quality ibadah in front of Him, as we're taught from child to perform ablution before we proceed to praying, reciting Quran and more. To conclude there's a hadith which emphasized about purity and cleanliness which sounds, "Cleanliness is a part of faith (iman)".
Last but not least, the "Kun Faya Kun" song can also act as our song to lift up our mental after being outrageously downed by series of mistakes and sins that we ourselves failed to resist. This song mainly encouraged us to always put our hope and faith onto Him and always remember that whatever happened is within His power so that we will never be in the state of tense in brimming with all kinds of sins. As the lyrics itself said, "Jab kahin pe kuch nahi bhi nahi tha wahi tha," which means, "When there was nothing nowhere to be found, He was there even then!".
So, this song is really good I hope you yourself would like to have a glimpse of hear upon it. To close this entry I would like to feature another bit of the lyric here. "Qatra mila jo tere darr barse O Maula."
"Every drop of purity You gave me, nourished me O God!"
Be, as it is.
