Androids are an advanced form of Artificial intelligence that has been developed with the sole purpose to replicate humans both in appearance and intelligence. They are a large majority of the working class in Central-118 and have became a huge part of the culture. Androids, however, are not seen as human and therefore are treated as mere machines in society.
While they are just AI, androids are extremely advanced and complex. They possess very human like thinking and behavior, however it is easy to tell an android apart from a human due to its rigid personality and lack of free will.

Androids are labeled in a very specific way in order to ensure correct sorting and identification, this is known as the Android Model Labeling System (AMLS). Androids are given an alphanumeric code that indicate model type, build number, and model version. AMLS codes are engraved in an android's inner casing and are pasted on the outer layer of their neck. This is so androids can be easily distinguished from humans.
In order to understand how the AMLS works, a brief explanation of each part of the code has been provided along with examples:
Model Type: indicates the overall structure of the build. Model Type is indicated in the AMLS with a alphabetic letter. A difference in model type means that the process followed to construct an android is different. For example; Model A's are built differently from Model B's
Build Number: indicates what number it is in the model's production. If an android is given the number 50 in its AMLS, it means that it was the 50th android built of that model. Build number is separated from the Model Type using a dash in the AMLS. For example; "A-1"
Model Version: indicates how new or old the model is. Model Version is indicated in the AMLS with a alphabetical letter. A difference in model version means that the model is a higher quality version than the previous with adjustments made to fix problems of the pervious version. For example; a model given the AMLS code A-1A is the first version of this build. An updated version of this build would be given the AMLS code A-1B.
Extra Examples: Model type J, Build 40, Version type E; J-40E
Android models can have numerous versions before the build ever changes. Meaning that while the version may change often, the overall construction process of the android may stay the same. Model Version is akin to the IOS updates you get on an iPhone while the Model Type is akin to the type of iPhone you have.
Sometimes, owners will give their androids names since they are easier to say than “G-134B”. Names are based mostly upon the “spelling” of the AMLS codes. For example, if we go back to our previous example of “A-1A” then this code would be pronounced as “Aia". Not all codes are “spelled” in a way that can be pronounced though, which is why some names are derived from the “spelling” of these codes. For example, the code “G-134B'' could be pronounced/ named; Gabriel, Gianni, Gilbert, etc. Naming an android also does not need to follow the “spelling” of the codes at all, it’s just a common practice to name them after their AMLS codes.
The government typically doesn't follow this tradition since they own such a large number of androids. It would become confusing if every android in the government had a name that started with a specific letter.
Some androids, namely Cyrus, have not been given a code due to her not being government built. This is also due to the fact that Dr. Stephens did not want to tie her down to the android labeling system. For this reason, Cyrus and others like her do not have an AMLS code.
Android model types change and develop rather frequently. While model types do have numerous versions before being changed, earlier model types such as A's and B's were rather short lived and are impossible to find nowadays. Currently, the government uses a variety of model types depending on the task at hand. As of right now, model J's were the shortest lived, only having about 50 produced before the build was scrapped all together.
Government androids work directly under the government and are constantly monitored. While technically all androids in Sector-118 are monitored and controlled by the government, government specific androids are strictly managed and only work for official government owned facilities or affiliated businesses. These androids are typically produced by the government's Advanced Robotics Department and any facilities under the department.
Government androids all wear specific uniforms, usually consisting of a simple suit and tie. However, the uniform can be altered depending on the job.
Common androids are the typical, everyday androids located around Sector-118. These androids are mostly seen in shops, restaurants, non-government owned businesses, private events, etc. They are monitored by the government, albeit less strictly than government androids. These androids are produced mainly by official manufacturers that follow the government's Android Creation and Production Code. So while these manufacturers aren't government owned, they comply with the government's laws.
These androids are the one most commonly sold in the Black Market as well as Jade's Trade Network. However, androids sold under Jade's Trade Network are given free roam capabilities, having more freedom than those sold on the Black Market.
Slums androids are common androids that have been trashed, abandoned, or escaped to the Slums from Central-118. These androids are free roaming and no longer monitored by the government. While they don't have the conscious freedom as autonomous androids, they still are able to act on their own. They act more like lost, emotionless children, and are fairly susceptible to influence, however the people of the Slums treat them well. That is not to say that people don't mistreat these androids though, with many being abused, destroyed, or tampered with by people in the Slums.
Autonomous Androids
Autonomous androids are very uncommon in Sector-118. Seen as taboo, these androids have been blacklisted by the government since they see it as akin to "playing god". The citizen are also very skeptical of autonomous androids since they rival human thinking.
Proto-Androids
Proto-Androids, otherwise just known as Robots, are the Artificial Intelligence that precedes androids. They are simple AI with chatting functions, however they don't possess the processing power that androids have, making them more like machines. Its very rare to find these robots in the City, however they are scattered all throughout the Slums.
While androids are widely used now, there is no doubt that their existence is extremely controversial. People don't take to kindly to the fact that humans can be easily replicated and mass produced through androids. In the beginning, many people detested the idea of android integration into society and feared that these machines could be unstable and possibly take over human society. These fears were confirmed when the production of autonomous androids began. The first ever autonomous androids fought back against the government and caused a great massacre. After much struggle, the autonomous androids were defeated and scrapped, never to be produced again.
