Yak Farm Australia

Yak Farm Australia is a family business that has been running for over a decade. Our yaks are bred, born and raised on our property in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales (NSW).

We have two distinct herds - one of which is composed of pure bred yaks and the other is made up of dwarf yaks - a hybrid breed. Our yaks are sold for meat, breeding stock, or pets and can be purchased at any age. We also supply yak milk and yak milk products to the public.

The business is run by Matthew & Lisa Reid & their three children with assistance from friends in times of need.

Yak Farm Australia is a small town approximately 35km south of Fall River, Australia. It is the centre of the Yak Farming community in Australia. The town has a population of approximately 500 residents all employed at the Yak Farm. The town was established in 1942 as an internment camp for Japanese soldiers captured at the battle of Fall River during World War 2.

The site was initially selected due to its proximity to the main road, and the close distance to a nearby railway station which would be used for transportation of supplies and products from the farm.

The land was initially leased to a group of British investors who had experience with Yak farming in their home country. The farm began operating commercially in 1945, but was taken over by the Australian Government following bankruptcy proceedings against the initial investors.

The farm has been operating continuously since then, and today employs around 100 people who care for approximately 3000 Yaks on 3100 hectares of land.
