Raising Yaks Video
For years, the yaks have been a huge inspiration for this family. It's been a great way to bring people to our farm and share our love for yaks with them. Our hope is to establish ourselves as a go-to source for yak meat among the growing community of people who are looking for alternative meats.
And once we've got that going, we can focus on raising the yaks in the most eco-friendly, sustainable way possible--so many yaks are raised in feedlots now, with all the nasty consequences that come with that model. We want to raise them out here on pasture, and graze them like God intended!
We'll also be working on a line of products made of yak fiber--yak down is one of the finest fibers in the world, and it comes from these guys right here!
The following is an excerpt from Raising Yaks in Bhutan, a new film by Lara Lee.
Bhutan is one of the poorest countries on earth. In 2002, the country's first democratic elections were held, and a young democracy was born. The new constitution acknowledged the importance of agriculture in this small Himalayan kingdom and its desire to improve the lives of those who farm there. The new government set out to transform Bhutan's patchwork of subsistence farms into commercial ranches that could provide employment, improved diets and better education for their children.
Lara Lee followed Bhutanese farmers over a period of two years as they attempted to make the leap from subsistence farmers to commercial yak ranchers, exploring what it means for a family when their farm is their livelihood; their home; their school; even their bank account. What does it mean for a country when the economic gap between rich and poor is widening? What does it mean for democracy?
