Yak is a unique animal which is found in the high altitude of Himalayan Mountain Ranges in India, Nepal, Bhutan and China. It is considered as one of the best domestic animals for the areas where normal cattle cannot survive. Yak produces meat, milk, skin, fiber and dung which can be used as a fuel. In this article we are discussing about the suitable conditions for rearing of yak.


The yak is a large bovid native to the Himalayan region of China, India, Nepal and Bhutan. It has long shaggy hair, a large head with two large horns, which can grow up to 1m in length and weigh over 30kg. The yak is raised for its dairy products, meat, hides and fur.


Ideal Conditions for Rearing:


Yaks live high on the mountains where there are few trees but plenty of grasses. The ideal temperature for them is -10C to 10C, though they can withstand temperatures as low as -40C and as high as +30C.


Yaks are the typical plateau animal that can adapt to extremely harsh environment. They can be raised in the cold and humid region with the annual mean temperature of -3 Celsius degree and less than 250mm annual precipitation.


Yak is a multi-purpose animal that provides milk, meat, wool and transport. It is a very hardy animal and it can be reared in high altitude cold Himalayan region. It is found in the hilly areas of Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Mongolia. Yak has great importance as a draught animal in India. It also provides milk for human consumption. Its milk contains about 10% fat content which makes it ideal for the manufacture of butter and cheese. Yak meat is also considered to be highly nutritious and it serves as an important source of protein.
