Here is how to cancel a free trial on iPhone before you're charged: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the trial and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple says to do it at least 24 hours before the trial ends, so don't leave it until the last evening.
That works for trials billed through Apple. If a trial isn't in that list, it may be billed through a different Apple Account or by another company, and you cancel it where you signed up. Here is how to handle each case.
Open the Settings app and tap your name at the top.
Tap Subscriptions.
Tap the app or service that is on a trial.
Tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find it.
You will know it worked when there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text. Apple says either one means the subscription is already canceled. If you have more than one trial running, repeat these steps for each one.
No iPhone handy? You can also cancel on the web by signing in to your Apple Account at account.apple.com.
Apple's guidance is to cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends if you don't want it to renew. Apple also explains that subscriptions bill at the start of each new billing period unless they are canceled more than 24 hours before the current period ends. In practice, the day before your trial ends is the real deadline.
Write down the end date the moment you start a trial.
Set a phone reminder two days before that date, not on the last day.
If you already know you won't keep it, you can cancel straight away. Apple's cancellation page doesn't promise you keep access for the rest of the trial after canceling, so if you want the full trial, rely on the reminder instead.
Search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple". The receipt shows which Apple Account was used.
Another Apple Account you use: sign in to that account and cancel there.
A family member's account: ask them to cancel it. You can't cancel a family member's subscription.
No Apple receipt at all: you may have signed up with another company. Check your bank or card statement to see who bills you, then cancel with that company.
Billed by your wireless carrier or another provider: contact that provider.
Cancel first so it doesn't renew again. Then, if you believe the charge shouldn't have happened, you can ask Apple for a refund:
Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund".
Pick the reason, then choose the subscription and submit.
Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update, and a refund is not automatic: eligibility can vary by country or region. In Germany, Israel, South Africa and Türkiye, Apple says you can cancel a subscription with immediate effect and get a prorated refund by contacting Apple Support.
Before you start a trial, note the price it turns into and how often it bills.
Record the end date and set a reminder two days earlier.
Once a month, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions and review everything listed.
Compare your card statement with that list to catch anything billed outside Apple.
When you cancel, take a screenshot of the expiration message so you have your own record of the date.
MoneyShield is a private subscription tracker that stays on your iPhone, with reminders for trial ends, renewals and cancel-by dates, and a Cancellation Assistant that points you to the official cancellation route. It doesn't cancel anything for you and never connects to your bank, so you still tap Cancel Subscription yourself.
