These Bible verses about patience show that biblical patience is more than waiting. It means being slow to anger, bearing with people, enduring hard seasons and trusting God's timing. Below are 16 key verses with references, short KJV quotes, what each one teaches and simple ways to practice patience this week.
Quotes are from the King James Version (KJV), with a few from the World English Bible (WEB) where a modern wording helps. Both translations are in the public domain.
Patience appears in the list of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22. The WEB reads "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith," while the KJV uses an older word: "love, joy, peace, longsuffering." Longsuffering is a good picture of the idea: putting up with difficulty for a long time without giving up or lashing out.
Across Scripture, patience shows up in three main ways:
With people: staying slow to anger and bearing with others' faults.
In hard times: enduring trials without losing faith. In James 1, the KJV's "patience" appears as "endurance" in the WEB.
Waiting on God: trusting his timing when an answer is slow to come.
1. Proverbs 14:29. "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly." A quick temper shows foolishness. Slowing down is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
2. Proverbs 16:32. "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." Self-control is a greater strength than force.
3. Ecclesiastes 7:8. "the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit." Pride rushes to be right. Patience can wait to see how things end.
4. Ephesians 4:2. "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love." Patience is how love handles other people's rough edges.
5. Colossians 3:12-13. "Put on therefore, as the elect of God..." a list that includes "longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another." Patience and forgiveness belong together, and both are things you choose to "put on."
6. 1 Corinthians 13:4. "Charity suffereth long, and is kind." The WEB says it plainly: "Love is patient and is kind." Patience is the first thing Paul says about love.
7. 1 Thessalonians 5:14. "be patient toward all men." Not just the easy people. This verse sits alongside caring for the weak and the discouraged.
8. James 1:3-4. "the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." Hard seasons can grow steady, mature faith, if you let the process finish.
9. Romans 5:3-4. "tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope." Endurance builds tested character, and that leads to hope.
10. Romans 12:12. "Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer." Patience in trouble is held up by hope on one side and prayer on the other.
11. Galatians 6:9. "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Keep doing good, even when results are slow.
12. Psalm 37:7. "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself." Waiting on God includes refusing to stew over people who seem to get ahead unfairly.
13. Psalm 40:1. "I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry." Patient waiting is not silent resignation. The psalmist cried out, and God heard.
14. Lamentations 3:26. "It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD." Written in grief, this verse pairs quiet waiting with real hope.
15. James 5:7-8. "the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it." A farmer works and then waits for the rain. Patience is active trust, not doing nothing.
16. 2 Peter 3:9. "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise... but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish." Our patience reflects God's patience with us.
Reading verses is a start. Patience grows when you practice it in small, ordinary moments.
Pause before you reply. When you feel a flash of irritation, take one slow breath and pray a short line from Proverbs 16:32 before speaking or typing.
Pick one person to bear with. Choose someone who tests you and decide ahead of time how you'll respond with kindness (Colossians 3:13).
Name what you're waiting for. Write it down, then pray Psalm 37:7 over it each morning.
Turn delays into practice. Treat a long line, slow traffic or a late reply as a chance to choose calm instead of complaint.
Memorize one verse. Write it on a card and read it at a set time each day until you know it.
Review your day. Each evening, ask: where did I rush, and where did I wait well? Thank God for the second and confess the first.
One caution: being patient with people doesn't mean staying somewhere unsafe. Bearing with ordinary faults is different from accepting harm.

It calls patience part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), links it to wisdom and self-control (Proverbs 14:29, 16:32), and shows it in waiting on God (Psalm 37:7) and enduring trials (James 1:3-4).
"Longsuffering." Modern translations such as the WEB render the same word as "patience."
Psalm 37:7, "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him," and Lamentations 3:26 are two of the most fitting. Psalm 40:1 is a good companion when you feel unheard.
Yes. It's the fourth in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control.
