MECSTAT is a collection of techniques from Solution Focused Therapy. It stands for:
Miracle question (elicit goal states and elucidate problem) — If a secret miracle happened which resolved this situation, what would be the first things you would notice?
Exception question (elicit filtering and create doubt) — Are there any situations in which your assumptions might be off or the patterns are not always there or your behaviours produce different results?
Coping question (elicit behaviours and identify strengths) — What do you do to cope with the situation?
Scaling question (elicit evaluations and disrupt polarised thinking) — On a scale of 0 to 10 how (important, likely, difficult, etc.) do you think this is?
Time-out (allow for reflection and incubation) — Is this a good moment to take a break?
Accolades (validation and affirmation) — How did you do that? (See Appreciative inquiry)
Task (continuation and planning) — What will you do as a result of this?
