Logline- An imaginative young orphan named Arthur stumbles upon a portal to the spirit realm where,
with their older sibling Everett, finds new friends, great adventures, magic and a lurking invader they must stop before ghosts of loved ones are dissipated and the spirit realm is destroyed.
OVERVIEW
On the small island of Odessa, Arthur and Everett’s family was torn when their father disappeared one day without a trace. While their other learns to continue moving forward, Arthur and Everett grew up creating wondrous stories of their family’s reunion and the adventures they’d go on. Arthur craving adventure and comfort befriends animals. Like when he took a befriended toad on a trip to the schoolhouse to show his classmates but scared the class instead. Everything changes however, when Arthur discovers a tree on their farm that is the gateway portal to the spirit realm. Arthur, Everett and their new friends must now put together the clues for the missing spirits and defeat the evil lurking in the shadows. Meanwhile, their father Theodore has been trapped in the spirit realm, manipulated by an evil spirit and his own devotion to his studies to extract energy from spirits to great power.
STRUCTURE
Influenced by media such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Owl House, Over The Garden Wall, and Steven Universe, Dawn Of Autumn’s Reign is a story influenced by genres like fantasy, adventure, action, and comedy. I want to focus on themes of love, family, and the importance of healthy interpersonal relationships. With more playful themes such as the importance of connection, creativity, kindness and how strong it is to be yourself. The hope for the spirit realm is to stop The Explorer and The Lurker from exploiting the citizens for labor and extracting other spirits for power.
CHARACTERS
ARTHUR LEE- Arthur is an optimistic eleven year old with an overhyped imagination, the antithesis to his older sibling Everett.
Although brave, his fear started young when he was attacked at the age of two by a bear cub only getting a small scar after his father had stepped in.
Arthur was only five years old when his biologist father disappeared leaving him with the fuzzy memories of his childhood, learning more through the stories told by his sibling or mother. Arthur yearns to know his father but knows what is more important to him is making sure his family is together and happy.
Arthur is a gentle boy and always emphasizes the importance of kindness and love. His awkwardness and daydreaming antics often get him in bizarre situations but it never stops him from slipping out of weird circumstances.
EVERETT LEE- Everett is a seventeen year old who is approachable and responsible but still tries to find their identity without a father figure and as a nonbinary person. Their main focus is their responsibilities with their family and farm. Their father went missing when they were only eleven and was left growing up for six years with only the memories of their father. Everett loves to read and would often head to quiet places alone to sit and read as an escape from their responsibilities.
In the town there are not many people who are aware of Everett’s identification. Since they are more masculine than feminine, lots of the townspeople believe that they are male and address them and their duties that way. The boys in the town make fun of them for their lack of physical ability and bully them for that. Unfortunately, during an ice hockey game Everett fell through the ice and was taken to the nurse where they spread rumors of Everett’s identity. Everett has not been near water since and never learned how to swim.
EIRA- (Pronounced AY-ruh) this sassy free-spirited spirit (get it?) is an independent, quick-witted goat who is bitter due to her past. Don’t let her soft cute appearance trick you as she can be brutally honest and self-centered. However, she has a soft side for Everett as she welcomes them to the spirit realm, as well as protects the two kids when some mean spirits harshly tell the kids they couldn't leave, although she admitted that they were correct.
Eira shows her kindness to the selective few like when Arthur and Everett were hungry Eira stole them some meals from the local market so they could eat. Eira secretly wants to break down her walls and be a good friend. Eira helps Everett figure out their identity and their importance to the group.
TOMOS- Tomos is a short-tempered prideful spirit. He always likes to think he is the strongest spirit in a situation, constantly overpowering most spirits physically. Although very tunnel visioned at times of his brawn, he is extremely loyal and loving to those that understand him. When Arthur helps remove Tomo’s tail from a fallen tree (that he chopped himself) he builds them a cozy hideaway for them to rest at as they develop a game plan to retrieve Tito and get the kids back home.
He wants more than anything to open up his own antique shop of collected human items to bring comfort and familiarity to the spirits that enter the realm. Throughout the story, he collects knick-knacks and items on the trail and puts them in a pouch.
TITO- Tito is a strong-willed, cocky toad with a silly walk and approach to everything. With a good heart for justice and a surprisingly good swing with a sword, he hops his way into situations he can’t always get out of but has a great connection with the rest of the gang that keeps him safe and in check. He sees himself as a strong knight and is always willing to help or meet new faces with the same goals as him.
When Arthur finds him, he is quick to change from a cold knight to a springy new ally. He takes a leadership role on the execution of plans but the others keep his character and relationships in check. Tito is a quick addition to the group and although not always present he fills a vital role in the gang’s adventure.
THE EXPLORER- The Explorer is a tall lanky human who took over the spirit realm helping his superior, known to the spirits as The Lurker to extract and control the spirits. The Explorer did not like to be told "no" or to have his authority questioned, even by his superior. When any of the spirits reject his commands it would usually result in an angry, violent outburst of rage.
The Explorer runs from his past as he believes what he is doing is for the greater good. Who was once a man who found pride in helping others now lost in his trip to power. He lost his ties to his family and was so involved in his studies he completely blocked them from his memory and lost himself in the realm.
THE LURKER- A corrupted spirit self-centered, controlling megalomaniac who uses her power to take over the spirit realm and the spirits that inhabit the land. Her goal is to take over and bring order by using her powers to corrupt the spirits and make them obedient armies.
OTHER CHARACTERS
THEODORE LEE- Theodore is the local biologist but more importantly the lost father to Arthur and Everett. He is very wise and cunning to some fault. Theodore was very gentle to his family, he believed that his greatness would bring pride to their family. Selfishly he wanted to be the first to discover the portal between the spirit and human realm. He hid his tracks and went behind his family’s back to fully try and achieve greatness for them. Once going into the spirit realm and only speaking to the spirits, he grew to be selfish and aggressive, only looking towards his goal. Losing himself in the process and transforming into The Explorer.
GARETH FRASER- Gareth is a veteran from another island, the same island Clara originates from. Gareth is disabled from a crusade so he built himself a wheelchair that would allow him to fish comfortably at the shores of the island but he holds a great amount of wisdom. People do not like him because he isolates himself on the outskirts but he is the father figure to the kids that they never had.
Gareth, unknowingly to the rest of the group, is from the spirit realm who lingers in the human realm to watch life, especially the two kids. Gareth takes on a guiding role for the kids and a supplier to fight against the Lurker’s army.
CLARA LEE- Clara is a petite but independent woman without her husband. She is charming and very soft spoken. Many of the women like to gossip to her since she only listens about their problems and comforts them. She also comforts the townspeople by knitting scarves for them or lending a helping hand.
Once her husband went missing she had fallen into a depression, her drive and light was dimmed but she has slowly grown out of it. She became more closed off and soft spoken and only focused on daily tasks of working on the farm and working as a nurse. She focuses heavily on taking care of her children and focuses on protecting them from the unknown.
KEY LOCATIONS
ODESSA ISLAND- The main setting in the human realm where Lee’s Apple Tree Farm, The Twisted Tree, and Gareth’s Shore is located.
LEE’S APPLE TREE FARM- The home of the Lee family, this is a cozy small cottage that sits on a ten acre field. With the aroma of sweet apples and pine from the forest that frames the farm. This is where Arthur and Everett spend the time they aren’t in classes either playing make believe, reading, or drawing.
GARETH’S SHORE- Gareth is on the edge of the island but near the Lee’s acreage, a huge contrast to the woodsy setting of the farm and forest. A small handmade shack found where the sea meets the land. It is rocky but filled with peace. Gareth’s shore is where Arthur shares his animal friends to him. This is also where Arthur goes to find guidance in many difficult situations especially in the later half of the story.
THE TWISTED TREE- This abnormal tree sits in the clearing of the congested forest. It is a hideaway for Everett where they often escape to read and draw by themself. This place is key as it also acts as a gateway between the human realm and the spirit realm.
RAYA FLOATING ISLAND- This is the island that the spirits live on. On this floating island The Hideaway, The Explorer’s Cavern, and the Town of Arles.
TOWN OF ARLES- The town the spirits live in. It is a quirky town humming with energy. Spirits of all shapes and sizes coming together to attempt their part of living in harmony where the main conflict chokes.
THE HIDEAWAY- The hideaway is located in the spirit realm, created by the spirits for Arthur and Everett. It’s a cluttered home for the gang as they try to stow the two human kids from the Explorer and Lurker. This acts as the main base of operations reminiscent of the hideouts of Kids Next Doors and Sonic’s hideout in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020).
THE EXPLORER’S CAVERN- Located under The Town of Arles, The explorer’s Cavern is a labyrinth-like, spiky prison holding spirits taken by the explorer. This is where the lurker extracts the spirits to gain more power through their energy and where much key information is found.

Wirt, Greg, and Beatrice get all mixed up in the musical antics of a schoolhouse of animals, a lovelorn teacher, a grouchy old benefactor, and an escaped gorilla.
Arthur is sent home after pulling a prank involving a toad, is lectured by his brother Everret about being reckless, which still gives Arthur time to explore the island of Odessa and still fall through a magical portal in time for dinner.
Ep. 1
Arthur starts trouble when he sneaks a toad into the schoolhouse, causing his classmates to freak out and for him to be sent home. After traveling through the Island of Odessa’s lucious town and arriving home, he is lectured by Everett about being reckless. Their farmdog spots a badger, chasing it into the forest with the kids following behind him. They stumble upon a portal merged in a thick tree and bicker of its contents and dangers and fall into the portal.
Ep. 2
After getting thrown into a portal by their fighting, the kids get lost in a mysterious other world. After colliding into two unsuspecting spirits, they get warning about the world they’ve just discovered.
Ep. 3
With their new friends, they hear whispers of an evil spirit taking the harmony of the town of Arles. Tomo and Eira help the kids uncover a darker power hiding right underneath the town.
Ep. 4
Entering the depths of the city, trouble arises when they uncover the truth lurking in The Town of Arles with the help of another new face Tito who explains bigger power exploiting the spirits. The gang plots a way to free these unfortunate citizens from their prisons but get held back before they can execute the plan.
Ep. 5
After running into The Explorer in his caverns, Tito the Toad is captured by the Explorer as the rest of the gang narrowly escapes into a new hideout. As they reconvene in their new den they figure out the unfortunate news as to who is behind all of this and rewrite their approach.
Ep. 6
The gang decides to return back to the Human Realm for Gareth's hidden knowledge of the spirit realm. As they use their father’s old research with Clara, they unlock a possible weakness in the enemy's magic and a realization as to what their father could be working for. When they return back to the Spirit Realm, the Lurker uncovers a direct link into the Human World, expanding his original conquest into two realms.
Ep. 7
The gang sporadically retreats into their hideout and executes their plan to retrieve their friend but is stopped by Tito being mind-controlled like the rest of the Lurker’s army. They try to free him from the magic but their research fails. As Tito fights the gang, Everett’s water spills on Tito freeing him of the mind-control. They reunite and eavesdrop on the Explorer and the Lurker explaining their new conquest plans.
Ep. 8
With their new power uncovered, they focus on warning Gareth and the rest of the human world. Eira distracts the rest of the army while the gang heads to the portal to gather as much equipment and help as possible. Before they can enter the portal, The Explorer stops them but is splashed by the last bit of water, quickly fizzling their dad’s consciousness for a moment, until the gang is forced back into the human world as the Lurker approaches. The two kids are shaken up but Tomo comforts them. As the Lurker and his army enters the human world, Gareth reveals himself as a spirit and tells the gang to run back with the water and splash the Lurker to free the army.
Ep. 9
As they run back into their hideout for the last time, they gear up to locate The Lurker and fight their way to the top. They splash The Lurker, freeing him of the mind-control revealing an orb of Gganbu. The orb, resonating with power, quickly latches itself onto the Explorer who now heads the army as a sort of hivemind. The army retreats from the human world, which captured Gareth and Clara, and focuses all its forces on the gang who hide in the town.
Ep.10
The town defends against the conquest, harboring Tomo, Tito, Arthur, and Everett. Discussing the Orb of Gganbu, they know if they shatter the orb the spirits are freed. As the town clears a path for the gang, Tomo defends himself against mind-controlled Eira, while Tito and the Lurker halts the army. The kids trick The Explorer and obtain the orb, drowning it and freeing the spirits. The reunited family returns to the human realm with their new friends.

I feel most relaxed when I can escape from technology and be outside in nature, camping with loved ones. I draw inspiration from the adventures my siblings and I would have while camping in the woods, often making unusual friendships. Now more than ever, young people need a voice and an outlet to return to a simpler time. I wanted to create an inclusive and comforting show to be that escape many people need.
