Part 1 (14:00-15:00): The Strengths of Introverts in the Language Classroom
by Heather McCulloch
In the last few years the topic of introverts has finally become popular. Being an extreme introvert myself, I felt neglected and ignored as a student. First, I will explain what an introvert is and dispel some of the myths that remain. I will then discuss the science behind the busy introverted brain. Finally, I will offer some teaching techniques and activities to help your introverts feel like a valuable part of the language classroom.
According to Myers-Briggs, Heather McCulloch is 90% introverted. The Big Five Personality Test scores her at a scale tipping 94%. As a student, her teachers often wanted her to "speak up" more in class. Now that she is a teacher, she often hears other teachers complaining about students who never speak. This has sparked her obsession with learning about the introverted brain. She embraces all students' differences and enjoys exploring all the many ways to help each individual student be a star in their own way.
