Title: Using iPads and iPhones in the Classroom
Speaker: Daniel Beck
Daniel Beck came to Gunma JALT packing heat. Using more than four devices, a display and a TV he demonstrated to our members state-of-the-art technology and ways in which it can be implemented in the English classroom. Prior to wowing his audience, Beck prudently laid down a case for using (and allowing) devices in the classroom. Primary among the many benefits Beck described was the ability of technology to more smoothly bridge the transition between classwork and homework. The end of the class no longer means the end of the exchange. By utilizing the same devices in class, at home, and everywhere in between, students and teachers can teach and learn wherever and whenever is convenient for them. Not surprisingly, many of the apps Beck recommended (Evernote, Dropbox, Google Docs, Twitter, Skype and even old fashioned email) can be used to increase the effectiveness of teachers and students alike. True to his title, Beck demonstrated his art using Apple kit, but his core values apply to any technology being used in the classroom: Tech is a tool, not a panacea. Beck left JALT Gunma members with the wisdom that bottom line for any class, whether technology-infused or not, is sound pedagogy, thoughtful design, and smooth implementation.
