WORKSHOP CONTENTS
Atsushi Iida is an Associate Professor of English in the University Education Center at Gunma University, Japan. He was awarded his Ph.D. in English (Composition and TESOL) at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include second language writing, poetry writing, literature in second language education, and writing for academic publication. His work has been published in various journals, including Assessing Writing, Qualitative Inquiry, System, Scientific Study of Literature and Asian EFL Journal.
飯田敦史(群馬大学 准教授)
青山学院大学文学部英米文学科卒業後、ペンシルベニア州立インディアナ大学 (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) にて修士号 (TESOL)、博士号 (Composition & TESOL) を取得。専門は、英語教育学、第二言語ライティング。主な著書にProfessionalizing Second Language Writing (分担執筆)、Asian English Language Classrooms (分担執筆)、Graduate Study in the USA (分担執筆) など。また、Assessing Writing, System, Qualitative Inquiry, Scientific Study of Literatureなどの国際学術雑誌より論文を出版。
Keynote Lecture 1: Second Language Poetry Writing Research: Past, Present, and Future

Teachers and researchers are increasingly interested in using second language (L2) poetry writing as literacy practice in the composition classroom (Chamcharatsri, 2009; Hanauer, 2012, 2014; Iida, 2017; Spiro, 2014) and as research methodology (Chamcharatsri, 2013; Hanauer, 2010, 2015; Iida, 2012, 2016, 2018). However, research on L2 poetry writing remains a developing area in applied linguistics and TESOL, and relatively few studies have reported on poetry writing’s contribution to development of L2 literacy. This presentation aims to identify several positive effects of poetry writing on L2 learning from theoretical and empirical viewpoints. Focusing on poetry writing produced by Japanese EFL learners, the presenter will discuss the value of L2 poetry writing, exemplify their ability to express themselves in the target language, and describe how poetry writing as a form of ‘meaningful literacy learning’ (Hanauer, 2012) can transform the EFL classroom.
近年、英語教育の分野において、詩を書くという言語活動が注目を浴びている。これは、ライティング指導への新たな可能性を秘めているためだけではなく、実証研究において詩が有用なデータとして使用できると考えられているためである。しかし、第二言語を用いて詩を作成することとライティング能力向上との関連性を報告する実証研究はあまり存在せず、その教育効果に関しても言及されていないのが現状である。そこで、本発表では、日本人英語学習者が作成した英語の詩に着目し、第二言語ライティング教育・研究の視点から、英詩を作成することとライティング能力向上の関係性を検証していく。
Keynote Lecture 2: Teaching and Assessing English-Language Haiku Writing

Poetry writing is viewed as an effective literacy practice in the second language (L2) composition classroom (Chamcharatsri, 2013, Hanauer, 2012; Iida, 2012). However, many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers know very little about the potential of L2 poetry writing and its practical usage in the classroom. This workshop aims to discuss this issue and explore the relationship between the task of writing haiku and Japanese EFL students. In this workshop, the presenter will first share his teaching practice of English-language haiku writing in the Japanese EFL university classroom and then discuss how to assess poems written by Japanese EFL learners. By attending this workshop, the audience will gain a better understanding of the value of poetry writing and expand the knowledge of how to teach and assess poetry writing in the L2 composition classroom.
本ワークショップは、より実践的な視点から、どのように英語で俳句を書くことができるのか、第二言語学習者にどのように俳句作成を指導したらよいのか、また、どのように英語俳句を評価すべきなのかを実際のライティング活動を通して体験していく。参加者の疑問に答えながら、新たな英語ライティング指導の可能性を探っていく。

We are currently accepting proposals for presentations in topics related to language education, including applied research, teaching practice, materials, or assessment. Preference will be given to abstracts that match this year’s theme “writing”.
