Story-based approach: exploring the world of stories with your young learners

In this workshop, Yanase explored how story-based approach can develop essential language learning skills of young learners as well as explore a number of storytelling styles and story-based activities. Participants also be experimented in developing their own story-based lessons using a picture book. Participants were shown various ways to use these ideas in their classes to facilitate their students’ language acquisition in a pleasurable and creative learning environment.
Some of the books that Yanase recommend are The Happy Day, The Elephant and the Bad Baby, and The Read Aloud Handbook.
Chiyuki Yanase is a language school owner and an ALT at public elementary schools in Tokyo. She has been teaching English to young learners in Japan for over 20 years and graduated from the MSc TEYL program at Aston University. She also started teaching at universities in Tokyo in 2015. Her research focuses on collaborative learning and literacy development of young learners. She has presented at numerous conferences, and is the co-author of textbook Guinness World Records 1 and 2 (Macmillan, 2013).
簗瀬千起 - 自身で語学学校を開いているだけでなく、東京の公立小学校で外国語補助教員をしている。20年以上にわたって日本で児童を対象に英語を教え、イギリスAston大学ディスタンスラーニング修士課程を修了し、2015年から東京の大学で教鞭を執っている。児童の協同学習や識字発達について研究し、多くの学会で発表している。また、学習用テキスト”Guinness World Records”の1巻と2巻(Macmillan, 2013)を共著している。
