We drove from Kilkenny to Kinsale and checked into the Acton Hotel.
Kinsale is known as the food capital of Ireland. A friend from Barre class told me we had to try the restaurant Fishy Fishy when there. The hotel offered to call and make reservations for us but the restaurant voicemail said they were closed Monday and Tuesday. Disappointed we set off to find someplace else to eat. As we walked past Fishy Fishy Marisa noticed there were people inside. We went to check it out and found that they were in fact open. I'm so glad they were as it was one of the best meals of the trip. After dinner we went in search of some traditional Irish music. Shelly got in the spirit and I later joined in for an Irish "Conga Line". We also met the owner of Jimmy's restaurant in Minnetonka.
The guys left early for their tee time at Old Head. The women stayed in Kinsale and spent the day shopping before meeting up with the men at the course.
The Stone of Accord is a landmark of Old Head. The stone is located out by the lighthouse but there is a smaller replica by the putting green. The plaque reads:
"As we set out to enjoy the royal and ancient pastime let us continue the tradition of the Eireann Celtic people by shaking hands through the stone to symbolize friendship, camaraderie and goodwill."
So of course we had to shake hands!
Tom was planning a retirement golf trip to Ireland when he was diagnosed with leukemia. In his honor we brought his Saint Bernard head cover with us and left it at the course. We found this niche in the stone wall where we could stuff it up a shaft and out of sight. Hopefully Tom was looking down at us and smiling.
After leaving the golf course we drove to Killarney and checked into the Cahernane House. The cellar bar became a favorite hang-out.
