“Do you really think Mukesh Ambani deserves all the credit, given his father’s legacy, and Reliance’s government ties?” asked a friend
One could claim that he was given an easy platform due to Dhirubhai Ambani, but you need to go no further than Anil Ambani to rest that case.
He has done well on three key parameters for a business leader:
1. Vision: Jio is truly an Indian disruption of Indian telecom. Previous players have taken a Western imported approach to telecom and had been milking consumers. Jio reimagined how telecom should be done with India, and took one of the largest bets in business
2. Execution: Since 2002, when Dhirubhai Ambani passed away, Reliance has grown an astounding 40x in market cap. It has raised $30Bn this year. Mr. Mukesh Ambani’s brother has had companies sold or shut down in the same time period
3. Management: When you have a company of this scale, being influential with the government is key. People may write it off as a negative, but I see it as an important and difficult skill that Mr. Ambani has mastered.
While he is the wealthiest Indian, I think he deserves a lot more credit for being intelligent with decisions
