"Patrol Car Collision on November 11, 2017
Eastbound SR-512 Golden Given in Tacoma
On November 11, 2017 at 2:17 am Trooper Cory Litchfield responded to a one car collision in the median Eastbound State Route 512 just east of Golden Given. A silver Honda was parked perpendicular to traffic in the median. Trooper Litchfield positioned his 2017 Ford Explorer partially on the very narrow shoulder and partially in the left lane, to protect the vehicle and driver he was contacting. Trooper Litchfield was standing at the driver's window of the silver Honda that was at rest in the center median talking to the driver.
Trooper Litchfield was on scene for approximately two minutes when he heard a very loud, violent collision. The driver of a blue Acura TSX failed to slow or move over as he approached Trooper Litchfield's Patrol Car. The blue Acura TSX impacted the right rear corner of the patrol car, pushing it over and onto its side. As the patrol car was pushed over, it struck the rear of the silver Honda that was already in the median. The roof of the patrol car struck the right side of Trooper Litchfield's body, knocking him against the Honda, then to the ground. The blue Acura TSX then separated from the patrol car and hit a Jeep in the right lane.
The driver of the blue Acura TSX was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). The 2017 Ford Explorer Patrol Car was a total loss costing $47,512.
Trooper Litchfield suffered a chin laceration, swollen right knee and right forearm, along with abrasions, and both hips were severely bruised.
The driver in the silver Honda suffered minor facial lacerations from the shattered glass of her vehicle and the patrol car.
The driver of the Jeep was uninjured.
The DUI driver in the blue Acura TSX that struck the patrol car suffered a laceration to his right index finger."
