SEAGRASS ECOLOGY

Seagrasses are one of the most productive habitats in the world, and they face a wide range of threats such as climate change, disease and coastal development. In Singapore, more than 40% of our seagrass have been lost to land reclamation, and the remaining meadows continue to be threatened by various anthropogenic stressors including poor water quality and dredging.

Together with partners from DHI Singapore and the National Parks Board, we embarked on a project to assess the resilience and restoration potential of seagrass in Singapore. Research objectives include:

  • Assessing the current status of seagrass meadows in Singapore

  • Identifying the local and regional connectivity of seagrass meadows

  • Understand the resilience and productivity of seagrass meadows

  • Assessing the potential of seagrass restoration in Singapore
