NESTT 2023 Session 1

Welcome

Welcome to the NESTT educator development programme.

This programme supports new educators interested in Barts and The London students at their practice, virtually or face-to-face.

Aims

Approach

The NESTT programme is facilitated virtually. We role-model a student-centred interactive approach to the workshops drawing on your own learning and educator experiences. We will share ideas and experiences of educating students, try new things out, reflect together on what is working, what can be improved and engage the pedagogical literature.

One take home on placement/session planning

·      there's no one size fits all - need to be flexible and adaptable

·      Sending welcome email and checking curriculum and student's priority.

·      Use of confidence rating

·      Being fluid to their learning needs, can reassess on a weekly basis what else they would like to see or include in their sessions.

·      First and foremost it is important to gauge what their expectations are and what they intend to gain from the placement.

·      think about a questionnaire about confidence- how confident is the student in various areas. might help them think about where to go next

·      Maybe we can record a little intro video to the practice (where the tea can be found etc)

·      Re-review their learning needs at a mid-placement check in and formally address this and check in again at the end.

·      Before joining the practice or initial meeting a welcome email, asking about curriculum and also asking the student what their learning objectives are and what they want to gain out of the placement, what type of learning they find useful

·      Attempt to contact students prior their placement / room spaces so the student knows where to go / obtaining the relevant learning objectives

·      identify their learning needs and dedicate a week to each to particular focus on both in tutorial and clinical contact

·      Recently I spent some time asking my recent batch of students about what their understanding of the objectives are and revaluating what they wanted from the placement at the beginning of each week. Also, given the students a choice about what they might want to do each week as well as tailoring the approach to each students strengths and weaknesses as well as pairing them with the most appropriate educators in the surgery.

·      we have a twice daily huddle at the start of each session, at that time students are welcomed and we ensure the plan for the day is in place for them, that means everyone in the surgery knows who they are

·      asking them what they require from placement - Time factor - to allow enough time to cover these as well as circular activities
