Standard 5: Learner-centered Connections to Community- Principle 1 and 2 (RATED ACCEPTABLE). This standard was rated acceptable because of limited partnerships between the library and community. In addition, library hours and programming during the summer were insufficient.
The summer programming described below was created through discussions in the library committee. The committee was able to help the librarian think of new programming during the summer months that would support the curriculum and connect the library to the community.
This artifact addresses Standard 5 Learner-centered Connections to Community because it connects the students to the community through service programs. It addresses Principle 1 by providing students, faculty and the community an opportunity to participate in the library program. The project also corresponds with Principle 2 by offering students greater time and access to library resources during the summer months. In addition, the summer programming developed supports Standard 1 Teaching and Learning-Principle 1 by increasing teacher and librarian collaborative instruction. Specifically, the project increased collaboration between the librarian and IB coordinator on designing instruction.
Collaboration with Culinary Arts Program
In collaboration with the culinary arts instructor, the library will sponsor a
Healthy Snacks program that will focus on helping students prepare healthy snacks on their own. The program will be open to both middle school and high school students. Students will learn a valuable skill set and the culinary arts program will increase awareness and interest in the program.
Summer Reading Initiative: Family Book Club
The library will support reading by providing students and their families materials for engaging in a family book club. Students will be able to check out 5-6 copies of the same book and discussion questions. Instead of a traditional reading log, students will post pictures of family reading time on Twitter or Instagram. Families that participate in the reading initiative will be invited to a luncheon hosted by the library at the beginning of the next school year.
Supporting IB: Community Action Service Project
In collaboration with IB coordinator, the library will develop CAST projects through makerspace activities. Students can select a project that will count towards their IB diploma.
Project 1: Animal Shelters: Students will use yarn and fabric to make dog toys and blankets that they will donate to local animal shelters.
Supporting IB: Community Action Service Project
In collaboration with IB coordinator, the library will develop CAST projects through makerspace activities. Students can select a project that will count towards their IB diploma.
Project 2: Winter Donations: Students will knit scarves, gloves and hats to donate as a part of local coat drives in the winter. Students can learn how to use the sewing machines in the makerspace during the summer and continue to work toward making items to donate in the late fall and winter.
