I have been using Google Sites in coursework since they were released over 10 years ago by Google. Google Sites were recently upgraded, and I was able to beta test the new sites format before using it in my class. This application website is an example of the "new" Google Sites. I utilize Google Sites in the following ways in my courses (a link to each site is in the title of each class and below the narrative is a screenshot of each homepage):
The students in my ED 225 class create their own site to post their work, thereby giving them a organized digital portfolio for interviews and other courses. ED 225 is completely organized through my class Google Site, and any work in Google Classroom is linked directly to the site. If you click on the "Current Class Student Sites" page on my class Google Site, you can see the sites that the students are creating this semester.
Students create a digital WebQuest in ED 225. This project sends students to specifically selected websites to research a topic. In order to streamline the WebQuest format and keep it organized for the students, I created a WebQuest Template Google Site. The students create a new Google Site for their specific WebQuest by following the digital template I provide.
I created a Google Site for my Elements of Literacy class in order to organize the class content as well as to provide a clear breakdown and templates for the child case study the students complete. The Case Study is very similar to the edTPA that the students have to complete in student teaching. Students must fill in templates online for the edTPA, so I created templates for each part of the Case Study that the students must get online on the Google Site and complete. The site clearly breaks down each assessment that the students must complete, and the template closely resembles the information that they will be required to document in the edTPA.
For the Elements of Literacy Final Exam, students are work in a group to create a complete Language Arts Block for either Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade or 3rd grade. As a group the students choose a Guided Reading text and subsequent learning activities, and then each individual student creates a different literacy learning center. The students must create and provide all of the materials, explain their center and the center work and write a complete lesson plan for each center. Students are given access to this Final Exam Google Site at the end of the semester, and are only able to access the directions and their specific class's section (past semester's work is privatized). Each group uploads EVERYTHING for their Language Arts Block onto their assigned section of the Google Site. Therefore, at the end of the semester each student in class has an example of a complete language arts block for all four grades. This information is an incredible resource as they pursue their careers in teaching.
