#DiscoveryReads Challenge
Primary Section
This month at Discovery, we are on a reading adventure in every home!
We want to see Discovery children reading at home regularly, our goal is to see them develop lifelong reading habits that will serve them as they grow every year.
The impact of reading for pleasure is four times more powerful on progress in vocabulary, mathematics, and spelling at age 16 than that of parental education or parental socioeconomic status.
If a child only reads at school, their academic progress slows down!
A Discovery student is a reader at home and a reader at school.
Through this campaign, we want to encourage Discovery families to create a consistent reading culture and a reading environment at home to support reading activities at school!

Introducing the #DiscoveryReads Challenge! (Primary Edition)
We invite parents and children to participate in the following challenges throughout March:
📖 Week 1 Challenges
(March 4 - 8)
*Read a book to your child's class, any school morning 8:30 to 9:00 am
*Read to your child their favourite book and capture the moment
*Take a photo of your child reading a book. We will give students prizes for the best photos
📝 Week 2 Challenges
(March 11-15)
*Help your child(ren) create a reading corner/space or a reading basket at home.
*Read a book to your child's class, any school morning 8:30 to 9:00 am
*Take a photo of your child reading a book. We will give students prizes for the best photos
🎭 Week 3 Challenges
(March 18-22)
*Have your child write or draw something related to their favourite book
*Journal with your child about their favorite book.
*Read a book to your child's class, any school morning 8:30 to 9:00 am
📚 Week 4 Challenges
(March 25-29)
*Monday 25th March - InterHouse Spelling Competition - the winning house gets a cup! (Older students)
*Tuesday 26th March - Costume Parade. Students will dress up as a book character!
*Take a photo of your child reading a book. We will give students prizes for the best photos
*Enrich the new reading corner/space or a reading basket at home.
*Join us for a book sale during parent-teacher meetings. Grow your home library!
Parents, we encourage you to share your photos and experiences in the class group or with your child's teacher as we all enjoy the March reading challenges together!

The long-term impact.. when children read at home
Reading for pleasure unlocks academic success across the curriculum. A child who is read to at age 1-2 years scores higher in reading, spelling, grammar, and numeracy skills at age 8-11.
Reading for pleasure at the ages of 10 and 16 has a substantial effect on a child's scores in vocabulary, spelling, and mathematics at age 16.
Children who are read to frequently at age five are over half a school year ahead in reading performance at age 15, compared to those who are read to infrequently or not read to at all.
Tuition and Fees Payment
Thank you to all parents who have settled their term 1 and 2 fees already, this allows us to continue to offer outstanding provision to your children. We are now processing term 3 payments.
Remember to clear termly fees and any charges related to sports kit, fieldtrips, photos as well as any exam fees that are due or overdue. Always send proof of payment to the admin line 0781111002.
Term 3 starts in April, please note that children should be kept at home until parents have settled all outstanding balances.

Important Notice: Late Pick-Up Fines
As we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, we kindly remind you of our late pick-up policy.
Late Pick-Up Charges:
For every child picked up late, there will be a fine of RWF 25,000 for the first 30 minutes.
An additional RWF 30,000 will be charged for every half hour thereafter.
Full Day Students:
On full school days (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday), please pick up your child between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm.
Parents with children still on school premises at 4:15 pm will be subject to fines. This policy applies to all days of the week, including club days.
Club Days:
On club days, collect your child immediately after their last club or no later than 4:00 pm.
Half Day Students:
For half-day students not participating in clubs:
Pick-up time is 1:00 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Fines will be applied from 1:40 pm.
For children aged 4 and below on half days:
Pick-up time is 12:30 pm.
Fines will be applied from 1:15 pm.
Other Reminders:
Fines must be cleared within 24 hours via Mobile Money.
Prompt pick-up allows our team members to attend evening classes and fulfill family obligations after their long workday at Discovery.
If you anticipate any difficulties with pick-up, please make necessary arrangements well in advance
.

11-15th March - Term 2 Evaluations for primary classes
Monday 25th March: Primary InterHouse Spelling Event
Tuesday 26th March:
Last day of classes for ages 5 and above (including the entire primary section)
Costume Parade (in celebration of books and reading, students will dress up as a character from a book they have read)
27th and 28th March
Ages 5+ and Primary classes will have parent-teacher meetings with student presentations
No classes for ages 5+ due to the meetings above
25th to 28th March
parent-teacher meetings for ages 4 and below
half-days for Early Years students ages 4 and below, all full students will be dismissed at 1pm
28th March Last day of Term 2 for Early Years classes ages 4 and below
29th March is a public holiday
29th March to 12th April: Term 2 Holidays
2nd 3rd, 4th April: Staff Professional Development
15th April - Term 3 Opening Day
