Newborns

Milestones in Language:

When babies are still in the womb, they are able to recognize patterns of language(s) they have been exposed to. They even have the ability to distinguish between their native and non-native speech. Once they are out of the womb, newborns can recognize differences in the language patterns compared to when they were in the womb. You may notice that they might:

• Cry as their way of communicating

• smack their lips and root when they are hungry

• yawn and arch their backs when they are overstimulated
