Project LIGHT: Literacy Initiatives for Growth, Hope, and Transformation
Project LIGHT is a literacy-focused initiative under the Learning Resource Management Section (LRMS) that aims to bridge learning gaps and promote inclusive literacy development among learners, particularly those in geographically challenged and underserved areas. With the guiding principles of growth, hope, and transformation, the project delivers targeted programs that enhance learners' access to quality learning resources and literacy opportunities.
This initiative is implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, leveraging division funds and creative strategies to reach learners and empower teachers. Below are the activities and programs under Project LIGHT:
The Coastal Literacy Project of the Schools Division Office of Ligao City, spearheaded by the Learning Resource Management Section (LRMS), was successfully implemented in August 2024. The project aimed to strengthen literacy in coastal and upland schools by providing access to quality storybooks in both printed and digital formats. On August 21, 2024, Catburawan Elementary School, led by School Head Mr. Angelo Quintan, received sets of printed storybooks and tablets preloaded with reading materials. This was followed by the turnover of the same resources to Tambac Elementary School on August 30, 2024, with School Head Mr. Frederick Orbase present during the ceremony. The activity was made possible through the collaborative efforts of LRMS personnel, including Librarian II Grace Saret, Education Program Supervisor Rommel Carl Peralta, Project Development Officer II Geraldine Carillo, and Public Schools District Supervisors Joan Quipid and Andie Sario. The project promotes equitable access to contextualized reading materials and supports the MATATAG curriculum's goal of enhancing foundational literacy skills among learners in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.
The Schools Division Office of Ligao City has successfully completed the distribution of storybooks developed under the project STAR3KIDS (Storybooks for Advancing and Reinforcing Reading Readiness of Key Stage 1 Learners). This initiative aims to strengthen the reading foundation of Kindergarten to Grade 3 learners by providing localized and engaging Big Books aligned with the MATATAG Curriculum. As of August 2024, all 55 public elementary schools in the division have received printed copies of the Big Books, ensuring access to quality and contextualized reading materials designed to enhance early literacy skills. In support of digital learning and wider access, the digital copies of the storybooks are now available in LIPAD, the official Learning Resource portal of SDO Ligao. This development promotes both print and digital resource utilization, supporting the goal of improving literacy outcomes among Key Stage 1 learners across the division.
