LEVELED READER BOOKS
(Leveled books are books that are organized into levels based on the difficulty of the text. As the levels increase, the books become more difficult and complex. At each level, specific factors are considered such as the number of words used, how often a word repeated and how familiar the words are to the readers.)
Leveled Reader Book A is the easiest level in the leveled reading system and is designed primarily for non-readers and beginning readers. It introduces children to simple texts and supports the development of foundational reading skills. At this level, texts generally use few words, familiar vocabulary, and repeated words or patterns, making them accessible to young or emerging readers. Book A is therefore appropriate for learners who are beginning to recognize words, build confidence in reading, and develop basic comprehension skills. Leveled Book B is the second level and is designed for beginning readers who have developed a basic awareness of print and are beginning to read simple texts independently. Compared with Level A, Level B presents a slightly greater level of difficulty while still providing support through familiar words, short sentences, predictable language patterns, repeated vocabulary, and illustrations that help readers understand the text. It aims to strengthen word recognition, reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence while helping learners gradually shift from relying mainly on pictures and adult assistance to using printed words and basic reading strategies. Levelled Book B is therefore appropriate for guided reading, independent practice, reading intervention, and other early literacy activities that support learners as they progress toward more complex reading materials. Leveled Book C is intended for learners who have progressed from Levels A and B and are ready to develop greater independence in reading. Before using Level C books, learners should have prior experiences with print, including Levels A and B, storybooks, read-aloud activities, and listening to stories. They should also have mastered approximately 10–15 commonly used Filipino sight words consisting of one to two syllables, be familiar with the alphabet and the sounds represented by each letter, hold a book and turn its pages independently, and demonstrate appropriate left-to-right reading behaviors, including moving their eyes to the next line when continuing a sentence. Learners should also pass the Level B Post-Assessment before progressing to Level C. The Level C assessment book is intended for teacher use only and should be kept separate from classroom books; it is used for pre- and post-assessment to determine learners’ reading abilities and progress. The pre-assessment helps identify what learners can do independently and with teacher support, and provides information about their strengths and existing knowledge to guide differentiated instruction. The post-assessment documents progress and summarizes learners’ achievement and learning over a given period, typically six to ten weeks for students who read daily. Leveled Book D is designed for learners who are becoming more independent and strategic readers and are ready to work with both fiction and nonfiction texts. At this level, learners should understand that fiction texts tell stories, while nonfiction texts provide factual information, and that each type of text requires different comprehension strategies. Recognizing the genre helps learners anticipate how a text is organized and select appropriate ways to understand and recall what they have read. For fiction, learners may be expected to identify and retell the beginning, middle, and end of a story, while for nonfiction, they may focus on identifying, recalling, and retelling important facts and information from the text. Levelled Book D also supports interactive learning through Partner Reading, where students read and discuss texts with a peer of similar reading ability. This strategy promotes active participation, reading practice, cooperation, and confidence while providing opportunities for both partners to develop their reading skills. Overall, Levelled Book D helps learners strengthen comprehension, develop appropriate reading strategies for different genres, and become more confident and independent readers.
