Universal 1440s for
Treble-Dodging Minor Methods
Notes and arrangements by Alan Rowe
Notes and arrangements by Alan Rowe
1440s of treble-dodging minor methods are often constructed using singles to add rows to a 720, and are effectively 720s of a plain method with the same lead-head order. The 1440s described here only use bobs, and can easily be adapted to all lead-head orders, including irregular methods. All are three-part callings.
The 1440s are based on a 720 using the standard calling. Two courses are then inserted into each part by replacing a plain lead with a block of three bobs, each a course apart.
These additional calls must be placed so that:
They are in the same place in each of the three parts.
The bell used as observation in the 720 is affected. So, for a 2nds place method the calls will be in the order In, Out, Make (or a rotation of that order), and for a 6th place method they will be in the order Wrong, Make, Home (or a rotation of that order).
The bells used as observation and sub-observation bells in the 720 must be a coursing pair in one of the inserted courses in each part, and must not be a coursing pair in the other. This means that not all of the orders given in the previous rule will work in all cases.
Two extra calls can be added to each part, at the leads where both the observation and sub-observation bells are unaffected.
Note that the absence of singles mean that these callings do not produce a true 1440 if the method cannot produce a true 720 with bobs only. This occurs when a lead of the method does not include an equal number of positive and negative rows with the treble in each position. These methods are rarely rung, and do not feature in most published collections.
This example shows how some callings can be produced for 2nds place methods with a 35264 lead head.
Start with the standard 720 with 6 as observation bell, and 5 as sub-observation:
720 2nds Place Treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W H
45236 – –
34256 –
3 part.
A block of three calls (OMI) can be placed at the end of this to give a true 1440:
1440 2nds Place Treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W M O I H
45236 – –
42356 – –
53246 -
34256 -
3 part
The additional three calls in the above example could also have been in the order MIO. However, inserting calls in the order IOM would be false, as 5 and 6 do not then course each other in either of the inserted courses.
An additional pair of calls can be added at the 2nd and 4th course heads of each part, where 5 and 6 are both unaffected:
1440 2nds Place Treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W M O I H
45236 – –
34256 – – -
52436 -
42356 - -
3 part
Some of the 1440s can be reduced to a true length suitable for quarter peals by omitting calls. Some examples follow, based on the second of the two 1440s above. Note that the same reductions do not work in all cases.
1) Omitting an Out in each part:
1368 2nds Place treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W M I H
45236 – –
23456 – –
54326 –
34256 – –
3 part.
2) Omitting an Out and the last Home in each part:
1368 2nds Place treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W M I H
45236 – –
23456 – –
54326 –
42356 –
3 part.
3) Omitting Out and Home in one part. In this example, the reduction has been made in the 2nd part, avoiding internal rounds.
1296 2nds Place treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W M O I H
45236 – –
34256 – – –
52436 –

54326 – –

25346 – –

In a few cases, a 1440 for a 2nds place method can be used to give a 1296 of a 6ths place method, and vice versa.
The following is a rotation of the first of the 1440s above, still with 6 as observation and 5 as sub-observation.
1440 2nds Place treble Dodging Minor (LH35264)
23456 W M O I H
54326 -
42356 –
35426 – –
34256 – –
3 part.
The same calling produces a 1296 for 6ths place methods with lead head 64523.
1296 6ths Place treble Dodging Minor (LH64523)
23456 I W M O H
54326 –
35426 – – –
34256 – –
3 part. No internal rounds
The following are all of the 1440s for regular methods based on the above plan, where 6 is the observation, 5 is the sub-observation, and 56 are never reversed in the coursing order:
The compositions are in groups of 4. The first pair in each group each contain six bobs in each part, and are rotations of each other. The second pair are based on the first pair, but with two additional bobs in each part.
There are also notes to indicate where shorter lengths can be obtained by omitting calls or using callings for a different lead head type.
