Single Oxford Bob Minor

Rules

This is one of the easiest methods to ring by rules only, without even learning the line!

Passing the treble

Always ring plain hunt below the treble, but look for where you pass the treble on the way up.

  • If the treble is one of the first three bells that you pass, then do the same as you would in Plain Bob Minimus, i.e.:

    • Pass the treble in 1-2 up = make 2nds.

    • Pass the treble in 2-3 up = dodge 3-4 up then make 4ths.

    • Pass the treble in 3-4 up = make 4ths then dodge 3-4 down.

  • Otherwise carry on out to the back and triple dodge in 5-6. Remember that you cannot dodge with the treble, so:

    • If you turn the treble from the back, make 6ths then triple dodge 5-6 down.

    • If you do not turn the treble from the back, triple dodge 5-6 up then make 6ths.

Instead of counting the three dodges, you can just dodge until the treble comes up to the back again.

Learning the line

Note that a "dodge follows dodge, place follows place" rule can be used:

  • The 5-6 down dodges are followed by the 3-4 up dodge.

  • The 3-4 down dodge is followed by the 5-6 up dodges.

  • The back work finishing with a place is followed by making 2nds.

  • Making 2nds is followed by the back work starting with a place .

Calls

Bobs

The bells dodging in 5-6 when the call is made are unaffected.

Otherwise, ring plain hunt in the from four places:

  • The bell that was about to make 2nds runs out, becoming 3rds place bell, which makes 4ths and goes down to lead.

  • The bell that is making 4ths and was about to dodge 3-4 down runs in to become 2nds place bell.

  • The bell that was about to dodge 3-4 up makes 4ths (making the bob), becoming 4ths place bell which goes down to lead.

Singles

The bell that was about to make 2nds is unaffected.

The bell that was about to dodge 3-4 up does the same as at a bob.

The bell that is making 4ths and was about to dodge 3-4 down make 3rds (making the single) becoming 3rds place bell, which makes 4ths and goes down to lead.

After being affected by a call, just use the rules to work out what to do next.
