Code of Conduct
The Banff International Research Station (BIRS) is committed to ensuring that all the activities it supports offer a welcoming and inclusive environment that is free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. Such an environment can only be achieved with the proactive support of all of participants.
We ask participants to read and abide by the BIRS Code of Conduct, and to contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment during this summer school.
Transportation
By plane: There are various Canadian flights going to Kelowna airport (YWL), from Calgary, Edmonton, Montréal, Prince George, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Waterloo, as well as flights from the US cities Seattle and Phoenix. Getting from the airport to your accommodations can be done by taxi, car rental, or public transit. Taxi services include Current Taxi (1-250-864-8294), Checkmate Cabs (1-250-861-1111), and Kelowna Cabs (1-250-762-2222).
By car: One can also drive from Vancouver to Kelowna: it is a long (5-hour) but scenic drive crossing the beautiful Okanagan Valley. Parking is available on the UBC–O campus, and complimentary parking is provided for guests staying on campus (register your license plate at the front desk). Within Kelowna, it is possible to use Modo Car Share or the ride services Lucky to Go and Uride, as well as public transit.
Accommodations
Every participant will be assigned a “single solo” room with private bathroom in the UBC-Okanagan Skeena Residence (1320 International Mews, Kelowna, B.C.).
The Front Desk is located in the Nechako Building (1255 International Mews, Kelowna, BC) and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Check-in is available starting at 4pm, and check-out should be done by 11am.
There is a small exercise facility in Nechako that you may use. The amenities also include lounges, informal study space, and laundry facilities.

Stay safe
Before your visit: Participants are strongly advised to purchase appropriate travel health insurance in case emergency health services are needed when travelling to Kelowna, Canada.
During your visit: It is important to continue to maintain a safe environment by doing the following:
If you feel unwell during your visit, stay in your room, monitor your symptoms, and if needed take a COVID test as soon as you can.
Wash your hands regularly.
Mask-wearing is optional inside all buildings on the UBC–O campus.
If you are experiencing COVID symptoms, please go to the nearest Pharmasave (20 min away) for a COVID test kit and follow the instructions for self-isolation.
First Aid Room: UBC–O has a First Aid Room located in room LIB 016B (in the Library Building, next to the loading bay on the east side of the library) that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
