Learning District
Learning District
To the right of the Baghdad Bazar from the time-travel portal is the “Old City”, or Learning District of the Abassids. Founded in the 700s with the caliphate, the Old City contains both the Golden Palace – home to an insightful walkthrough - as well as the famous House of Wisdom, home to Algebra Road.
Algebra Road / House of Wisdom share their own page. Click on either image to visit. Everything else in the Learning District is listed below.
Golden Gardens
Take a stroll through the bountiful gardens of the Abassid Palace on the far side of the Capital District. The centerpiece of medeival Baghdad, the Palace is magnificent and sprawling. The self-guided tour begins in the gardens, viewing various botanical plants which the real-life Abassids would likely have cultivated both naturally in Iraq and through Silk Road trading.
Unlike Japanese gardens which are famous for their naturalism, or European gardens famous for large expanses, Islamic Gardens exude geometry, believing mathematical shapes, linework, and symmetry are the pinnacle of beauty. According, the Abassid Palace Gardens exemplify Islamic gardening traditions, teaching guests through action & experience despite never outright telling guests such.
Then, the tour moves to the pools of the Abassids, admiring the beautiful tilework famous of Islamic architecture. On a hot day you’ll be yearning to take a swim – alas, this is a reflection pool!
Entering the palace itself, guests explore a few rooms and hallways. Persian blue titles contain immense detail and beauty, integrating calligraphy and abstract fractal shapes into the design, just as in real-life Baghdad & Isfahan today.
Pausing at the Caliph’s treasure room to admire a series of (replica) medevial artifacts acquired through trade, including European knight armor and Chinese gunpowder. The tour concludes with a last stroll through the gardens and a complimentary in-season fruit, handed upon exiting the walkthrough.
Study Hall
Algebra Road exits to the Study Hall, a small gift shop set in a quaint little corner of the library. Get books and retail relating to both the attraction, the House of Wisdom, and broader city merchantile.
Ssssssh! This is a library, quiet!
